Ellen C. Berrey

Ellen Berrey comes to ABF from Northwestern's Department of Sociology, where she is a doctoral candidate. Her areas of interest include inequality, culture, race/ethnicity, cities, law and society, and qualitative methods. Her dissertation, "The Ideology of Diversity and the Politics of Inclusion in the Post-Civil Rights Era," examines the logic and political uses of diversity ideology.

Stephen M. Engel

Stephen M. Engel is pursuing a Ph.D. in the Department of Political Science at Yale University. His research interests include American political development, inter-branch relations, and social movements, especially gay and lesbian politics. His dissertation, "As Party Exigencies Require: Attacking the Court as Harnessing Judicial Power," focuses on the relations between elected officials and the federal judiciary. His book, The Unfinished Revolution: Social Movement Theory and the Gay and Lesbian Movement (Cambridge University Press, 2001), investigates how the gay and lesbian rights movements developed since World War II in both the United States and the United Kingdom, with an eye toward analyzing how differences between a parliamentary and a separation-of-powers system may affect the development of trajectories, aims, tactics, and strategies of social movements and their consequent interest group communities.

Gabrielle Ferrales

Gabrielle Ferrales is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at Northwestern University. Her dissertation is entitled "The Prosecution of Rape as a War Crime." She received her JD from Georgetown University Law Center in 1997.

Sida Liu

Sida Liu is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago. His research encompasses the areas of law and society, the sociology of professions, and the relationship of markets and states. His dissertation is entitled "State, Professions, and Significant Others: An Ecological Analysis of the Chinese Legal Services Market." Prior to his studies at the University of Chicago, Sida earned a LL. B. at Peking University School of Law.
