FRM CONGRESSMAN MICKEY EDWARDS TO SPEAK AT FELLOWS ANNUAL BREAKFAST

July 28, 2008, ABF news

Former Congressman will speak about reclaiming American conservatism

CHICAGO, JULY 28, 2008 - Former Congressman Mickey Edwards (R-Oklahoma) will deliver the keynote address at the Annual Business Breakfast of The Fellows of the American Bar Foundation.  The event will be held at the Waldorf = Astoria Hotel in conjunction with the ABA Annual Meeting in New York City on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 7:30 a.m. in Peacock Alley.  Edwards’ remarks will be based on his recent book, Reclaiming Conservatism: How a Great Political Movement Got Lost – And How it Can Find Its Way Back.

A member of Congress for 16 years, Edwards held several senior leadership positions:  chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, member of both the House Appropriations and Budget Committees, and ranking member of the House Subcommittee on Foreign Operations.  After leaving Congress, he taught government and public policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government for 11 years before moving to Princeton in 2004.  He has also taught at both Harvard Law School and Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute.

Notably, in 2006, former Congressman Edwards served on the ABA blue-ribbon, bipartisan Task Force on Presidential Signing Statements and the Separation of Powers Doctrine, which examined the changing role of presidential signing statements in the current administration.  Edwards’ policy expertise has led him to chair task forces on foreign policy for The Brookings Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations.  Additionally, he is a director of several organizations in the fields of public policy and foreign affairs, including The Constitution Project.  He has also been an advisor to the State Department.  Edwards has degrees in both journalism and law and has been a regular columnist for a number of newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Examiner, and Boston Globe. For a number of years he has broadcast weekly political commentary on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered".

Jimmy K. Goodman, chair-elect of The Fellows of the ABF, said of his fellow Oklahoman, “Congressman Edwards wants Americans who love this country, and are genuinely concerned for its future, to get back in the game.

“If you care how and where our Constitution grants powers to and sets limits on the three branches of government, whether the President is exceeding his rightful powers, or whether Congress has abdicated its responsibilities to the executive branch, you will be educated and inspired with the wisdom and humor he brings to these timely topics,” added Goodman.

The Fellows of the American Bar Foundation is an honorary organization of lawyers, judges, and legal scholars whose public and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the welfare of their communities and to the highest principles of the legal profession.

The American Bar Foundation is the nation’s leading research institute for the empirical study of law.  An independent, nonprofit organization, for more than fifty years the ABF has advanced the understanding and improvement of law through research projects of unmatched scale and quality on the most pressing issues facing the legal system in the United States and the world.
